Range Shawl // Tolt Yarn & Wool // Hinterland

brioche, knitting, new pattern, yarnAndrea Mowry3 Comments
Joyful knitting. When yarn and needle come together in a serendipitous moment, and your hands don’t even need to be told what to do. You just sit back and watch something beautiful spring from your needles, stitch by stitch, seemingly effortlessly.

That is how I feel about the Range shawl.  The yarn is Hinterland Range from Tolt Yarn and Wool. Made from 50% Rambouillet and 50% Alpaca, it is woolen spun, soft and strong and utterly perfect in the four beautiful, undyed natural shades of White, Honey, Maple and Truffle. Together they form the a stunning neutral gradient, that when combined with some clever knit texture, melt sweetly from one hue to the next.

I love when the fiber tells me what it wants to be. Designing this shawl really was pure joy. Everything just worked. As the vision popped into my head, it easily translated to my hands and I was able to savor every stitch. As it poured from myneedles, I dreamt of winter walks in the woods and quiet, fluffy snowflakes falling from the sky. Wrapped up warm, protected from the wet and the cold, with only the crunching of my boots as the soundtrack to my adventure.

I hope you delight in knitting this shawl as much as I have!

Happy New Year!! 2015 was a huge year for me - truly life-changing! I owe so much of that to all of you! Thank you for your amazing support with all of my patterns, from your likes and favorites on Instagram & Ravelry, to your purchases and amazingly kind emails and messages. From the bottom of my heart - my dream wouldn't be coming true if it weren't for all of you!

That being said, I can think of no better way to celebrate than with kicking off 2016 with my first ever sweater pattern release - White Pine! This pattern was a long time in the making. I began sketching for it last spring, and my testers finished up with it at the end of November! I hope you will love it as much as I do!

White Pine

White Pine

I wanted a classic pullover sweater, that was easy to knit, while still remaining interesting! Simple enough for most intermediate beginners, White Pine is knit from the top down, completely seamlessly, while relying on the texture of the body to do all of your shaping for you! The growing garter stripes at the sides of the body not only create the dramatic slimming lines, they also gently shape the sweater into an incredibly flattering subtle A-line shape.

The set-in sleeves are also knit from the top down, utilizing short rows so that you don't have to fight with sewing in your sleeve caps! I really love this technique, and I hope you have have as much fun learning it as I did! Faux seams running up the center front and back give the sweater that touch of timeless style that you can dress up or down. Knit up in your favorite worsted weight yarn, White Pine will fly off your needles!

My beautiful Naturally Straight Forward partner, Annie Rowden (byAnnieClaire), knit up the most stunning gradient shawl to complete our first release of the New Year! This woman has got a way with naturally dyed yarns! I love the texture and all of the color possibilities that are waiting for this bias shaped shawl!

Farm Slippers for the Whole Family

new pattern, knitting, NaturallyStraightForwardAndrea Mowry1 Comment

I love the holidays!! Especially the days that we get to stay in our pajamas as long as possible...preferably surrounded by twinkling lights...while sitting next to the fire...with cozy slippers on our feet...

My newest pattern, Farm Slippers, is all about celebrating those days - sized for the whole family, quick to knit, and bursting with cozy! I knit mine up in the ever-amazing and soft Organic Merino from Fern Fiber! I am all about the marl these days, so if you feel like playing with a little color, grab two different sport weight yarns and hold them together as one strand. Or keep them classic with a heavy worsted or aran weight yarn.

These make great gifts for everyone on your list this year! There is just something so meaningful about giving gifts that you have made to the people you love. Our time is so precious, and often so fleeting, so when you choose to spend it knitting up something special for your loved one, it means so much! I hope you will join me in making this holiday season handmade. <3 <3 <3

Tinsel Mitts with House of A La Mode - 3 styles, 5 sizes

new pattern, knitting, mittensAndrea Mowry1 Comment

Happy holiday gift knitting time to all, and to all lots of wool!!

I am pretty stoked about today's pattern release - Tinsel Mitts!! A few months ago I was chatting with my friend, Heather, from House of A La Mode, about her stunning hand painted yarns. This woman has got an eye for color and knows just how to splash it on beautiful pillows of plied wool! She was mentioning ideas for some holiday colorways and how she wanted some simple, approachable patterns to accompany them. I knew immediately - mitts! Everyone needs a good mitt/mitten pattern in their knitting toolbox.

First off, we all like warm hands. Secondly, using up less than a skein of yarn and knitting up in just a couple evenings, they make the perfect gifts for everyone on your list! And I mean everyone - I kept the look simple, modern, and unisex with a faux seam running up the center of the front and back. I included all the different styles one might want - full on mittens, convertible mitts, and fingerless mitts! At first, I selfishly knit them up to fit - well...me! But once I shared a sneak peek on Instagram, I immediately began getting inquiries - would their be children's sizes? Men's? Small women's? Genius! Mitts for everyone! I got back to work and added 4 more sizes (my husband and daughter are quite pleased)!

I hope you enjoy knitting up these mitts as much as I did!! You can find House of A La Mode yarns the first weekend of every month in the Citizens of Textile pop-up shop! Check back at the end of this month for an interview with Heather!!

xoxo,

Andrea

Broken Thyme Cowl and YOTH Yarns

Once in a while in life we get lucky, and we make a connection with some really amazing people. A few months a go I got to connect with Veronika (Big Sister) of YOTH yarns. If you are not familiar with YOTH or their story - head there right now. I'll wait.

Goosebumps, right??

Everyday I am grateful to be doing what I love. To be able to create with my hands, work from home as I raise my young daughter, and to be a member of a community that is so full of love and support. Veronika's story echoes many of these sentiments. Leaving a job that was no longer fulfilling and following her dream to do something she really loves, with the support of her family along side her.

I love having the opportunity to use yarn that has so much love and care put into it. With every stitch you can feel and see the difference. Their palettes are so beautiful and they definitely knit up into a fabric you want to wrap up in!

For this cowl I really let the yarn speak to me. Originally I was going to use the Little Brother (fingering weight) for a separate project from the Big Sister (dk weight). But as they sat snuggled up together in my basket, I just couldn't get past how they looked like they were meant to be knit together! I decided to marl the fingering weight yarn together (Hazelnut & Shiitake) and then used the DK weight yarn (Thyme) for a pop of color. With some striping, texture, and simple lace, it turned into the perfect year round cowl - Broken Thyme!

I hope you will have as much fun knitting it as I have, and if you have the chance to get your hands on some YOTH yarns - I just can't recommend it enough!!

To celebrate, I'd love to offer the coupon code BROKENTHYME, good thru Wednesday October 7 at midnight EST for 15% off of Broken Thyme! <3

Vintage Prim

Brooklyn Tweed version of the Vintage Prim - oh so squishy and wooly!

Brooklyn Tweed version of the Vintage Prim - oh so squishy and wooly!

I am releasing a new pattern today that is very near and dear to my heart.  Last December I published my first ever little collection of knitting patterns - The Staghorn Collective. The gem of the bunch was my Prim hat. That sweet little hat opened a new world of possibilities for me, thanks in large part to an amazing yarn shop owner and her daughter. Shelli and Ashleigh from Knitterly in Petaluma, CA.  An incredibly encouraging email lead to another collection of designs, an interview on Woolful and a trip to California to teach a knitting workshop. (Can you say "dreams coming true!!")

I owe a lot to that little hat and all of the wonderful people I have met because of it! Fast forward to a couple of months ago when the extremely talented Heather Bostic of House of Ala Mode dyed me up a custom colorway and named it Vintage Peony. This woman is magic with yarn and I knew I wanted to use it for something truly special. This yarn is all of my favorite colors rolled up into one stunning skein!

Woah Mama! - detail of Vintage Prim knit in Vintage Peony and Sea Foam by House of Ala Mode!

I was flipping thru one of my all time favorite knitting books - Knitting Fresh Brioche by Nancy Marchant (this woman is a genius!) - and stumbled upon her stitch pattern for what looks like the classic cabled Staghorn! Serendipity stepped in, shoved my face a little closer, hit me over the head with a skein of Vintage Peony and said "Helllooooooo!!!" And that was that. I was determined to knit up a sister hat to the original Prim - a wiser, more intricate, possibly a little hipper, big sister.

This hat plays well with both fancy hand painted, speckled yarns, and more classic woolen spun natural yarns. Vintage Prim uses less than 250 yards of fingering weight yarn, and despite it's complicated appearance, even my newbie brioche tester said it would be just fine for brioche beginners!

So let's celebrate!! Vintage Prim, along with my 3 other brioche patterns, Briochealicious Shawl, Marley and the Briochealicious Hat, are 15% off with the coupon code laborday2015, now thru September 7 at midnight EST!! Snag up one, or all four, and head over to my Ravelry group to knit with us in the KNIT in COLOR KAL!!!

KNIT in COLOR, new pattern, briocheAndrea Mowry1 Comment

Hello everyone!! I am so excited for today's pattern release!! A hat and a shawl that are perfect for the beginner briocher, and enjoyable and relaxing for those brioche veterans out there! I wanted to create some staple brioche patterns that could be knit again and again, changing up colors, adding stripes, and allowing the knitter to flex their creative muscles! My goal was to make these patterns approachable for every level of brioche knitter!

Squishy garter stripes and two-color brioche give the Briochealicious Hat a lot of room to play! Try different colors for each brioche section, grab that coveted speckled yarn that has been hanging out in your stash, and get this fun hat on your needles! Plenty of drape gives this hat a breath-ability that makes it perfect for anytime of year! Both sizes are able to fit a huge range of ages thanks to the stretch and elasticity of brioche and garter!

Marley is a traditional triangle shawl that is a fabulous beginner project for brioche newbies! You will get into the brioche groove quickly and then enjoy a relaxing knit all the way to the border where we will switch to a beautiful marled garter edge! After searching around I couldn't find a simple brioche triangle shawl anywhere and new this gap had to be filled! I can't wait to knit myself a couple more of these- I am thinking one with neutrals and one striped version as a stash buster!

To celebrate these new delectable brioche patterns you can save 20% until midnight tonight with the coupon code YUMMYBRIOCHE !!  We would love to have you come join us over at the KNIT in COLOR KAL!
